ECF’s first blog was posted exactly four years ago. Since then we have been blogging about different topics: volunteer spotlights and recognition, event publicity and recaps, donor generosity, and family support services, to name a few. But today marks our final entry simply because we have no indication that our blog is being read! In keeping with the times, ECF has established a Facebook page with an ever growing number of followers. If you have a Facebook account, we hope you will “like us.” If you are not inclined to register for Facebook, you can still visit our Facebook page through our website: www.emmanuelcancer.org. Does Anyone Read Our Blog?

Twenty-eight years ago, Joseph and Susan Vizzoni started the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation (ECF) at their kitchen table. The organization had humble beginnings: the first regional center was someone’s garage! Today, we have four regional centers, dedicated staff and volunteers, and families who hail from every county in New Jersey.

Twenty-eight years ago families struggled with pediatric cancer. While survival rates have increased, pediatric cancer hasn’t been eliminated. So, ECF remains steadfast in supporting families in need. Communication with families, referring agencies, funders, supporters, and volunteers has been crucial to the growth and continued existence of ECF.

Twenty-eight years ago, methods of communication were limited: US postal mail, phone, and sometimes an occasional fax. Today, we have so many options for staying connected: email, website, Facebook, Twitter, and Blog, to name a few. We could spend hours posting on Facebook, updating our Blog, and even tweeting. But that doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense.

Ultimately, we want to communicate with you using methods that you most prefer and that make the best use of your time and ours! We’ve seen a growing number of followers on our Facebook page but not as much enthusiasm for our Blog. That said, we are wondering, does anyone read this Blog? Would you miss it if it were gone? Ridgewood CCD Group Helps ECF

A second and third grade CCD group paid a visit to ECF's Northern Regional Center. Students learned about ECF and then helped Regional Director, Laura Savage, stock the food pantry. J&J Supports ECF

For the third year in a row, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) staff reveled in showing their holiday spirit. In December, employees of the Finance Department - Enterprise/Competitor Analysis threw a holiday party for ECF kids and their families.

Employees turned an ordinary conference room in J&J’s New Brunswick location into a room fit for a festive celebration. After enjoying lunch, teams of ECF families and J&J employees worked together to build gingerbread houses. Houses were judged and the winning table was granted the privilege of throwing a pie in a brave employee’s face!

No one left the party empty-handed. J&J created over 40 decorated shoe boxes filled with gifts and surprises for ECF kids in the Central Region. J&J also donated bags of consumer products to be shared with ECF families. Prior to the party, the employees held a giving drive, fueled by personal challenges to raise money at different levels. Donations were matched by J&J, resulting in a very generous contribution of $5,700 to ECF!

ECF is incredibly grateful to the Finance Department-Enterprise/Competitor Analysis for their generosity and effort. Special thanks go to Stephen Wielgus and Candace Tomczak who worked so hard in putting this event together and to Sherri Cai, the Finance Manger, who has been the driving force behind this event for the past two years. The smiles on everyone’s faces were proof that a good time was had by all.

Teen Donates Bat Mitzvah Centerpieces to ECF

Thank you to Hannah, a middle school student, who thought of ECF when preparing for her Bat Mitzvah.

Hannah created cheerful centerpieces for her celebratory luncheon. Each table was decorated with a basket of toys, puzzle books, bubbles, crayons, and other treats for ECF kids and their siblings. Baskets were adorned with colorful balloons and information about ECF.

After her event, Hannah donated the centerpieces to the ECF Eastern Region. Everyone at ECF thanks Hannah and her family for their generous spirit!

Dear Friend,

I am writing to you as a mom who lost a child to cancer, and as a friend of the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation (ECF). I hope you will read my story and consider making a donation to ECF today. Every amount counts and goes a long way to helping people like me whose kids have cancer.

This year, ECF helped over 250 New Jersey families battling pediatric cancer.

The next time you are in a public place look around you. You will see many different types of faces. Each is the type of family that ECF helps - single families, grandparent households, divorced, separated, rich and poor, young and old - families who have heard the words that John, Nikirah, Ashley, Jorge, your child, our child, their child, has cancer.

When I heard those words I had no idea who to turn to outside the hospital. This wasn't supposed to happen to me or anyone I knew but it did. As a single working mom of three girls I learned that cancer affects families in my neighborhood, in my child's school, and now in my own household.

When I was lost trying to figure out how to navigate the maze of medical terms, working to pay bills, get my other kids to school and still spend time with my dying child, I found ECF. They helped pay bills when I missed work, and they even sent me a clothes dryer so instead of spending hours in the laundromat I could spend the last few months with my child. Groceries were delivered because I often forgot we were low on toilet paper or food. They brought smiles to my children's faces with a holiday party and gifts for them all.

This year, ECF provided over $170,000 in food and material donations to families in need.

I had someone to talk to who understood what living the nightmare of childhood cancer means. I had someone to advocate for me and to hold my hand when the tumor spread. When my precious daughter finally left her suffering behind, ECF offered hope and a shoulder to cry on. Even now when most think I should have moved on, ECF understands that although I got up and continued working, that I am still missing a limb. So they continue to offer me and my other two daughters an ear of support, a hug when I need it and a light in a world that has too much tragedy.

This year, Caseworkers made 448 home visits and spent over 1800 hours advocating for our families.

After my daughter died I remember driving and thinking the world should have stopped. Everything should be different, someone should notice. And then I saw a rainbow. To me ECF represents one of the rainbows in this world. In all that downpour, when it seemed like the rain would never stop and I felt overwhelmed by the storm, ECF was the ark which helped provide food, shelter, and most of all someone to listen and understand.

ECF cannot help people like me without your support. During this holiday season, I hope you'll remember families like mine who really need your help. Please make your most generous donation today . It's a beautiful gift to give.

Ho Ho Kus Girl Scouts Donate Dollhouse

All of us at ECF would like to thank the HoHoKus Girl Scouts, Troop 1169,
for donating this incredible dollhouse to five-year old Emily, who lives in Lodi and has a brain tumor.

This eco-friendly doll house took the girls an entire year to construct. They did most of the work by hand, including sewing the blankets and making all of the miniature food out of clay.

These philanthropic girls will be entering the sixth grade soon. We are truly amazed at what they’ve accomplished.

Mother's Day Tea Fundraisers

I am Juanita, and my family received help from ECF when my daughter, Nikki, was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma. She was just three months old. I had to stop working in order to tend to her needs. The emotional and financial support we received during that difficult time was essential to our family. We are thrilled that Nikki has been in remission for seventeen years, and throughout this time, we have continued to stay involved with this important organization.

This year, ECF is honoring the moms, who, like me, have had to struggle in order to keep our families strong under extreme challenges. As the official hostess of these events, I urge you to participate in a Mother’s Day Tea fundraiser in your region. Central Region's 2nd Annual Fashion Show

The Central Region's Second Annual Fashion Show “Fashion, Food & Fun” was held on Sunday, January 31, 2010 in Scotch Plains. All proceeds benefited the Congregation Beth Israel and the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation. The event was sponsored by Mezzacca and Kwasnik, LLC.

The Fashion Show was a huge success. Lord and Taylor hosted the event with their clothing line. Models included 29 women, men, and children, and they all dazzled the audience with outfits highlighting spring, summer and evening wear. Central Regional Center volunteers Ali Linsenberg and Bobby Way are pictured, above.

A surprise visit was made by Miss Mercer County, Courtney Charatsaris, who spoke to the audience and signed autographs. In addition, there was a musical performance by students from the Community Theatre at Mayo Center for the Performing Arts in Morristown. The afternoon ended with a raffle of over 70 gifts.

James DeMontigney Says Goodbye to ECF

It is with mixed feelings that we announce the resignation of James DeMontigney from his position as a Caseworker at ECF. Jim has been with us since 2002. He is the type of professional who has always gone the extra mile in doing what he can for his families. He has been featured multiple times in our newsletter, Outlook, especially in the "Above and Beyond" column.

Jim is moving on to a new phase in his life, and in the process is leaving New Jersey. While we wish him the best, all of us at ECF, especially the families he served, will miss him terribly. Thank you, Jim, for your years of dedication.

New Orleans-Style Fundraiser

Gayle Jones and Al Alleman, who live in Plainfield, were both born in the South. Keeping tradition alive, the couple hosted a New Orleans’ Style New Year’s Celebration on Saturday, January 2, in their spacious home in the Van Wyck Brooks Historic District.
Thirty-five friends and neighbors were treated to classic dishes like black-eyed peas, jambalaya, gumbo, and bread pudding with whiskey sauce. But it wasn’t only about good food and fun. The party was a fundraiser for the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation, and at the end of the night, the couple raised $1450 to help our families. We are all so grateful to Gayle and Al!

A Heartfelt Message for the Holidays…

Even after years of working here, every once in awhile I still get a powerful reminder of why the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation is such a vital organization. Yesterday, Mr. C. stopped by the Central Regional Center to pick up some items on his way home from work. Barbara had prepared a bag of holiday gifts for his daughter. Just a few weeks ago, he would have been picking up two bags, but this single father is in the midst of his grief this holiday season. His other daughter, Vanessa, lost her battle to cancer last month. As he departed with his gifts, we hugged and I could feel the transfer of that grief from his body right into mine. I can only hope that we alleviated some of his pain, even if for a brief moment. I am proud to be part of an organization that is there to help for as long as we are needed. Keep Mr. C. and all of the families of the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation in your hearts this holiday season.

Long-Time Volunteers Host Garage Sale for ECF in Middletown

Betty Dworkin and her husband Eli held a weekend-long garage sale to benefit ECF families in the Eastern Region on September 26 and 27. “With all the neighbors and friends who came together, we made over $1500.00. But to make things even nicer, two ECF families showed up to sing our praises,” Betty told us. Years ago, Betty used to deliver groceries to one of these families, so she was especially pleased to see them. Helping Betty were volunteers Mary Shamilian and her daughter Jamie, Jean Charte, a group of teenaged boys to do the lifting, and several neighbors to help set up. We are thankful to them all, and to all who came out to support this sale.

Young Mackenzie Olson Volunteers at Southern Regional Center

Beyond the big blue eyes lies a heart of gold. Mackenzie Olson is a young lady with a vision and passion for helping others. While many at age 11 are self-absorbed, Mackenzie is making a difference in her community and school, all the while remaining humble.

“The best way to find your self is to lose yourself in the service of others” is the mission for Mackenzie’s charity, “Crowns for a Cause.” Through her charity, Mackenzie has brought together past and present pageant title holders, their families, and friends to provide community service. “Crowns for a Cause” has participated in a variety of projects, including helping with the “Birthday in a Bag” program at the Southern Regional Center.

“Fit for a Princess” will benefit a young girl from ECF. In honor of this princess’s birthday, she has put together a huge gift bag that includes a tiara and other items that would be ft for a princess. Mackenzie has even involved the upcoming Miss New Jersey contestants and asked each contestant to donate an autographed picture.

Dental Health for ECF Kids

Ablaze Communications and ECF!

Ablaze Communications services marketing professionals to effectively communicate their message through newsletters, brochures, postcards, and other marketing materials. Several years ago, under the direction of Lauren Alexanderson, ECF’s former Director of Marketing and Communications, Ablaze designed ECF’s award-winning 25th anniversary Annual Report (check it out here: http://www.emmanuelcancer.org/docman/doc_view-20.html).

Jennine Arena, President, became involved with ECF when she was living locally. She initially provided some design services to ECF through Ablaze, and soon afterwards she and her children were raising funds to support ECF’s services. Today, Jennine’s company contributes 1% of all proceeds from design to ECF! We are very grateful for this partnership.

Jim Cirone Runs NJ Marathon for ECF

This year’s New Jersey Marathon took place from May 1 - 3, 2009, in Long Branch. Not only was ECF designated as one of the beneficiaries, we had very special representation there. Volunteer Jim Cirone, who is a cancer survivor, donned an ECF tee-shirt and ran a half-marathon despite his treatment some years ago for Ewing’s Sarcoma in his left foot.

In Jim’s words, “I had radiation, 18 months of chemotherapy and surgery, and was fortunate that they were able to take out the effected bones and save my foot. It was one of the first times they tried limb salvaging surgery and I was very fortunate that it worked. Running the marathon is a great experience to see some old guy (I’m now 43) who’s basically living a normal life and competing in such a physical event.”

We are all proud of Jim, and thank him for promoting ECF. Most of all, we wish him continued good health.

GCCS Food Drive for Southern Region

Suzie Cordially Invites you to a Private Mother’s Day Tea Party

My name is Suzie and I am the mother of a child with cancer. My son, Jake, was diagnosed at age six with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Jake’s journey ahead would consist of bone marrow biopsies/aspirations, lumbar punctures, blood draws, x-rays, scans and chemotherapy. After many delays and hospital stays, Jake completed 3 ½ years of treatment. He began his new life after cancer. However, on January 16, 2007, a year and a half after completing treatment, we were told Jake’s cancer was back. His brother Colton wasn’t a bone marrow match for Jake so it was decided chemotherapy would be the course of treatment. A year and a half later, it was clear that Jake’s treatment wasn’t going according to plan and it was decided that Jake would receive an unrelated bone marrow transplant due to the many delays in treatment. On July 29, 2008, Jake received a bone marrow transplant. The road to recover has been long and hard but he is back in school and is enjoying all his favorite activities.

Our family could not have gotten through this difficult journey without the support we received from the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation. The emotional support, financial support and food deliveries are valuable services that allowed us to focus on Jake’s care. It truly does take a village to raise a child. We can’t thank the staff and the many volunteers enough for what they have done for us. If I were asked to give advice to a newly diagnosed patient’s family, I would say, “Accept the help and just say thank you!”

This Mother's Day, you can help provide services to over 200 NJ families like mine, whose children are battling cancer. Best of all, you can do this without even leaving your kitchen table! All you have to do is enjoy a cup of tea on Mother’s Day, in honor of the mothers who are facing the enormous challenges of caring for a child with cancer. Who Can Resist an Afternoon of Chocolate?

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the 2nd Annual Chocolate Lover’s Delight was held on Sunday, February 8th at the Sakima Country Club in Carney’s Point. Attendees were treated to a luncheon, a smorgasbord of delectable desserts, and a centerpiece chocolate fountain. There was also an auction table, a 50/50 raffle, and entertainment by students from the McAleer School of Irish Dance and the Broesler School of Irish Dance. Of the 12 dancers, one is ranked 5th in the world, and several compete both nationally and internationally.

Attending were General Manager Michael Drager of NuStar, and ECF Board Treasurer Steven Wooton. Contributing to an already successful afternoon, the fact that the Zachary and his family, recipients of ECF’s support, were able to be there, made this an even more meaningful time for all. Their Caseworker, Kim Cranstoun, addressed the crowd. Volunteer Event Coordinator Peg Kirsch and her team of helpers did an outstanding job in putting this event together, along with staff liaison and Southern Regional Director Laurie Ehrlich. Nearly $6,000 was raised to help families in this part of New Jersey.

Pointsettia Bash a Huge Success!

Each holiday season, 94.3 The Point FM holds a Pointsettia Bash to benefit the families served by the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation. This year's event took place on December 11 at The Headliner on Route 35 in Neptune, and featured New Jersey's own group, The Nerds.
Party-goers brought new, unwrapped gifts that were later distributed to ECF kids and their siblings.

Philanthropy Begins with Children

You may remember Kim Cranstoun, ECF Caseworker for the Salem County area, from a feature story in one of our recent newsletters. Kim has been battling cancer in her own family, since the diagnosis of her husband, Jamey, who has a brain tumor. Although mother and daughter are busy dealing with their own stress, Caeley, who is five years old, still managed to collect donations at her birthday party for the food pantry at ECF’s Southern Regional Center in Woodbury. This just demonstrates that in the face of adversity, and at the age of five, it’s never too soon to give back. ECF welcomes these gifts, and donations of any size. Inspiring Thoughts for Uncertain Times

Lately, it has been almost impossible to avoid hearing alarming reports about a slowing economy, rising fuel costs and the negative impact both are having on the lives of Americans. These bleak reports can take their toll on a person's psyche, especially in the case of donors, volunteers and nonprofit staff members who want nothing more than to provide the best services they can to those they serve.

Making a difference is difficult enough, but during such periods when "donor belt-tightening" is predicted, the challenges we all face grow beyond donations to include managing our internal loss of energy and motivation. Traditionally, economic downturns leave everyone feeling weak, lethargic and fatigued. It is natural to experience a drain of energy, but now is not the time to succumb. In fact, now is the time for all of us to step up and be a source of inspiration to those around us.

Energy, both high and low, is contagious. High energy is associated with positive thoughts and creates enthusiasm and movement, while low energy creates blocks and paralysis. Low energy must be overcome if we are to be a motivating presence in the world.

Here are some tips to help us shift our energy:

Be conscious of your thoughts
What we choose to focus our thoughts on dictates our energy level and the energy we transfer to others. We need to understand the source of our thoughts. Start by asking yourself how possible it is that the way you feel is really the result of a recent economic report, an encounter with a troubling neighbor, or even a personal event? It is easy to get caught in a cycle where negative thoughts take hold of our emotions and alter our moods. But being aware of what triggers our descent down the path of negative thinking affords us the opportunity to choose whether we continue down this path of negativity or to focus on positive thoughts that motivate and inspire us and those around us.

Be conscious of the energy levels of others
Just as your energy is contagious, so is the energy of those around you. What is the likelihood that you are absorbing the low energy of a colleague or friend who is talking about a terrible day? We can empathize with others, but the danger comes when sympathy becomes our approach. Sympathy means you have taken on the pain of someone's unfortunate circumstance, while empathy is about understanding the situation while not getting emotionally attached.
It is not necessary to intentionally stop your own thoughts and feelings; rather, you must avoid getting caught up in them.

Make the shift
It is helpful to realize we have less of a chance to help others when we're in a state of low energy, so being conscious of your energy level is important. When you recognize low energy in yourself, activate thoughts that will make you feel good. Whether it is remembering a pleasant experience, hearing a favorite song or simply telling yourself, "I want to feel good," you have to push yourself to a place where your energy is high. We can be the spark that ignites the fire in others when we act on positive emotions, speak with a passionate voice, answer questions in an inspiring way or simply emit confidence and joy.
There are always different ways for us to approach what is happening in our world. It is a matter of choice. We can see tough times, higher gas prices and less money and conclude that things are hopeless. Or we can look at the world and see opportunities and possibilities. This is a time to for us to make a difference, to be the kind of person that will inspire greatness from those we touch.

James works part-time with ECF as a fundraiser. He also volunteers his time through his leadership coaching company Higher Potentials.

ECF's friends at The Westfield Foundation have generously chosen to support the Family Services Program with a $2000 grant. These funds are earmarked for counseling and advocacy services for local ECF families. 2008 marks the fifth year that The Westfield Foundation has supported ECF.

The Westfield Foundation was founded in 1975 by a group of local citizens led by former Westfield Mayor H. Emerson Thomas. Its mission is to enhance and support the quality of life of the citizens of Westfield. The Foundation is an independent non-profit organization funded entirely by contributions.

St. Cecelia's Pajama Day

The students of St. Cecelia's School of Iselin, NJ came to school in their pajamas a few weeks ago. While they were at it, they collected pajamas for ECF's kids in Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex, and Union Counties. Inspired by an episode of Oprah, kindergarten teacher Trudy Palko decided to infuse the fun pajama day at her school with a healthy dose of community spirit. The children collected over 25 sets of pajamas and books, wrote notes to ECF's kids, and presented ECF Central Regional Director, Barbara Kopel (pictured with two of St Cecelia's students), with beautifully wrapped bags at an assembly last week.

Note: Pajamas are a GREAT gift for a kid or teenager going through chemo or radiation.

Cancer Poetry Project Re-Released

Valero Supports ECF with $30,000 Grant!

Once again, the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation was a recipient of charitable donations from the Valero Texas Open Benefit for Children Golf Classic! The golf tournament, one of the oldest and most prestigious tournaments on the PGA tour, was held the week of September 30-October 7. This year, the Valero Texas Open gave $8 million to charity!

Pajamas for Pajama Day

St. Cecilia School, one of the 30 schools that participated in Dress Down Day this fall, is collecting pajamas for ECF kids for their upcoming Pajama Day in March 2008.

Trudy, a teacher at St. Cecilias, was inspired by an episode of Oprah. On the show, a woman had collected new pajamas for foster children. Trudy said, "It made me think of your cause (ECF), and I wondered if we could collect pajamas for cancer patients."

Pajamas are a great gift idea for cancer patients because many prefer to receive treatment in comfortable, warm clothes. For those who have been hospitalized, cuddly pajamas beats a hospital gown any day!

*The Westfield Chorale began in 1987, when a group of high school students of various faiths led the gathered community in carol sing, called "Carols in the Round." Since that first year, 392 singers have participated. The Westfield chorale is based out of the First Baptist Church of Westfield. Scotch Plains Ministerium Dedicates Thanksgiving Service to ECF

This year, the Ministerium of Fanwood/Scotch Plains, a group of religious organizations in both towns, dedicated their cooperative Thanksgiving service to the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation. Since January 2007, members of the Southern Regional community have mobilized around the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation and its Southern Regional Director, Laurie Ehrlich. I would like to share a short story that demonstrates the strength of ECF's network of support and underscores the vital role that our volunteers play in bringing this support to families across New Jersey:

A few weeks ago, Laurie was talking to one of her wonderful volunteer food drivers about a family in Camden County in desperate need for a bed for their daughter. The driver immediately responded, "Laurie, it is taken care of."

Within the week, the volunteer purchased a new bed and delivered it to the family's home.

The hallmark of ECF's program is the free, in-home counseling we provide at no cost to New Jersey families in the comfort of their home. The material assistance pillar of our network of support is led and organized by 5 wonderful Regional Directors, and it is largely made possible by the individuals, small businesses, religious and service organizations in communities across the state. A special thank you to everyone who brings ECF to life.

The Emmanuel Cancer Foundation is thankful for the wonderful people and communities who rally each year to ensure that ECF families are not deprived of a fulfilling holiday meal while their child is being treated for cancer. Some highlights from 2007...

In the Eastern Region, 18 Thanksgiving baskets were delivered to families. 18 holiday food baskets have also been delivered to families for the holiday season, along with presents for the children and their siblings from their wish lists.

In the Central Region, the First Baptist Church of Scotch Plains donated 10 turkey dinners, soup to nuts, for our families. These dinners were delivered to their homes right before Thanksgiving.

In the Southern Region, a local restaurant made & delivered an entire Thanksgiving meal for a family in South Jersey, who are also New Orleans evacuees. In December, turkeys and hams were donated for family holidays by Rastelli Foods Group.

Ramen, Ramen Everywhere!

On Tuesday, November 20, I received a phone call from a teacher at Watchung Hills Regional High School. Her students had collected a lot of food for the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation, and she was ready to drop it off.

You can imagine our surprise when a large school bus pulled up in front of the building, packed to the brim with cans of food, boxes of Ramen noodles, and bags of clothes! With everyone working together, we were able to unload the bus in just over an hour. As I sit at my desk, which is now resembling a cave since I am literally surrounded by food, I am awed at the magnanimous efforts of the Watchung Hills students. This food drive was by far and above the largest one that ECF has ever received. I can't wait to start getting these supplies to our families for the holidays!

URBALIST CD a Great Resource for Kids & Teens

Kids and teenagers often turn to the arts to help them vent their frustrations while battling cancer. For Jesse Hershkowitz (aka Urbalist), a talented, young adult hip hop artist, simply writing songs was just a first step. Together with friends and family, he wrote, produced, and recorded an entire album. Cancerous Flow: Lyrical Journal is Urbalist's first major effort, and he is already making waves among young cancer patients and survivors. He's already made an appearance on the Stupid Cancer Radio Show, created by I'm Too Young for This! The course is USATF Certified and is a single loop entirely within Ho-Ho-Kus, beginning and finishing at 333 Warren Ave (Ho-Ho-Kus Boro Hall.) Runners, walkers & strollers welcome! All of the proceeds from this years' race will be donated to two local charities: Emmanuel Cancer Foundation (ECF) and Go 4 the Goal Foundation. It can be very difficult to make deliveries to families who live in towns in New Jersey that are hard to reach. Fortunately, ECF has an incredible team of dedicated Caseworkers. This month, Evelyn Dormekpor, one of the Caseworkers in our Southern Region, has kindly volunteered to make food deliveries to families in Camden, where ECF does not have a strong volunteer base. We are so grateful to her!

10 Ways YOU Can Help a Family Battling Pediatric Cancer

Often, when we learn that a friend, family member, or neighbor has a child who has just been diagnosed with cancer, we don't know what to say or how to begin to help. This list, compiled both from my own experience and from suggestions given by the director of A Lion In the House, Julia Reichert, offers 10 ways that you can best help your friends, family, or neighbors.

(Please also remember that cancer treatments can span a long stretch of time--even years!, so extend your hand to help as often as you are able!)

1. Help with house chores: Offer to rake the leaves, weed the garden, take the car to the shop, pick up groceries, take a pet to the vet, etc. Families often don't have time to take care of these little chores, and having a trustworthy friend help out on this end can be an incredible relief.

2. Volunteer to cook a meal: Even better, offer to make a bunch of meals that can be frozen and heated up quickly in a microwave or oven as needed. Find out what the patient & his/her family really like to eat. Also remember that chemotherapy can cause painful mouth sores, so try to make a couple meals that are not acidic!

3. Arrange for limo vouchers or taxi vouchers (Great solution for co-workers, church/synagogue members, other group members). Whether a family has to commute 2 hours or 20 minutes to the hospital, an on-call limo service or taxi vouchers can help alleviate the added problem and often high cost of parking a car for several hours in a hospital parking lot. When I had cancer and had to commute to and from New York City almost daily, parents of my friends from school made an arrangement with a limo company. People could pre-pay for rides, so that we could call the limo company as needed to request a ride to and from the hospital.

4. Offer to babysit: Caregivers need a break, so offer to sit with the child and read, watch a movie, or keep them company while they sleep at the hospital or at home. Also, parents may need babysitters for younger siblings while their child is at the hospital or clinic receiving treatment.

5. (For teachers) Arrange to send notes/drawings home: Receiving mail from classmates and friends can really brighten a child's day and warm up a stark hotel room. My homeroom teacher arranged to have paper & markers in the front of the classrooms, so that my friends could write a card for me at any time. I received a batch of cards from my friends every week, and it always cheered me up!

6. Ideas for gifts:

Extra pairs of soft jammies (flannel or cotton are good for air-conditioned hospitals); button-up fronts & low pockets make it easier to deal with IV lines and spontaneous doctor exams.
A special, soft blanket or squishy pillow (the blankets and pillows at the hospital stink!)
Activity books or books to read: there's a lot of hurry up & wait on treatment days or while the patient is hospitalized. Find out what the child likes to read/do.
Silk flowers (real plants are usually prohibited in the hospital)

7. Appoint a spokesperson: Families are often bombarded by calls to check up on the child's condition. Work with the family to appoint a spokesperson at church or school to be the go-to-person for information and updates.

8. Siblings need attention, too: When the sick child is confined to the house, offer to take the other siblings on a walk, window-shopping, or to the movies. Find out what the siblings like to do. Don't pry with questions about the family, but be ready to listen and reassure.

9. Listen & Be Sensitive: Don't wear the parents out with questions. Don't bring up tough questions unless the parents/caregivers offer to go there. If a parent has lost a child, don't say "Well, she/he is in a better place now." or "I know how you feel." Most parents feel that there is no better place for their child than with his/her family, and unless you really have lost a child yourself, you can't possibly understand.

10. Stay in touch! Don't avoid the family because you don't know what to say or do. If you're nervous, send a card! If you want to help and don't know what to do, ask someone who is close to the family.

Being a survivor of pediatric cancer (osteosarcoma, right wrist), I have realized that despite my attempts to put the experience behind me, I am always hyperaware of pediatric cancer, and lately, of its impact on life in remission. This website is the gold standard for all things pediatric cancer related. It’s actually how my family found ECF when I was sick!

3. Children's Cause for Cancer Advocacy
This website helps guide anyone with an investment in pediatric cancer toward action. Of particular interest is the Rise to Action Conference, which is scheduled to happen on October 6 & 7 in NYC. I encourage any survivor to check it out.

4. Cure Search

CureSearch unites the world's largest childhood cancer research organization, the Children's Oncology Group, and the National Childhood Cancer Foundation through their mission to cure childhood cancer. Research is the key to the cure.

5. KidsHealth
Sponsored by The Nemours Foundation, this website is fantastic for presenting health information (not just about cancer) in an age-appropriate, user-friendly manner. The site can be used by parents, teens, and young children together to educate each other on specific health problems or to help maintain daily health.

6. A Lion in the House
A Lion in the House is both a film created by PBS and is accompanied by a comprehensive website that discusses the before, during, and aftermath of pediatric cancer. Of particular interest – Alex’s Art Corner allows anyone to share artwork & a story; and 5 Things Cancer Survivors Can Do – is a brochure that gives useful information to cancer survivors. There is also a specific website set up just for teenagers.I just added the film to my NetFlix queue –I can’t wait to watch it.

6. Lance Armstrong Foundation

While LAF tends to be adult-focused, there is plenty of information available to help survivors & others affected by cancer get involved and make a difference on a national scale.

7. Outlook
This website specifically deals with survivorship issues for pediatric cancer patients. Its features include insurance & financial issues, health issues, school & job issues, FAQs, personal stories, etc.

8. Pediatric Oncology Resource Center -
Resources and information for parents of children with cancer . . . by parents of children with cancer.

9. Planet Cancer
Planet Cancer is a community of young adults with cancer. (You know, that age between "pediatric" and "geriatric," where no one knows whether to give you a lollipop or have a serious talk about your fiber intake.) It's a place to share insights, explore our fears, laugh, or even give the finger to cancer with others who just plain get it. They don't deny the dark side of illness and death, but they also share a belief that laughter and light can turn up in the strangest places.

10. Survivor Alert
You survived…what’s next? This website is full of useful tools and information for young cancer survivors. Not to mention…there is an entire page of funny t-shirts, hats, & gifts available for purchase (items that only cancer survivors & their families could understand!)

The Little Things ECF Can Do

ECF's network of support often extends beyond the three pillars for which we are best known: counseling & advocacy, material assistance, & financial aid. Below is a story about an ECF staff member and a hotel manager who went above and beyond for an ECF family.

Theresa P. is a 22 year old with a brain tumor. She lives with her family in Hunterdon County. Theresa's Caseworker, Lisa, contacted ECF's Central Regional Director, Barbara, with a request for help. Lisa conveyed Theresa's condition, specifically noting how difficult it is for the young woman to walk. Theresa is too old to stay at the Ronald McDonald House, and when she needs to go to the hospital in Philadelphia for her treatments, the cost of a hotel room was prohibitive for her family. Barbara contacted Mr. Ken Kapikian, the General Manager of the Sheraton University City, who comped two room nights for Theresa and her mom, which included a hotel room, tax, & parking.

James Boyle has taken over as the Development Officer. James is a former ECF staff member, who has returned to ECF after gaining a wealth of experience at Seton Hall University, the International Rescue Committee, and Thirteen/WNET. On June 20, The Independent Order of OddFellows of NJ presented ECF with a check for $32,500 in support of program services and marketing/development activities. ECF is proud of this partnership and is so grateful to the members of IOOF for remembering New Jersey's youngest cancer patients.

SUMMERTIME, and the livin' is easy...

that's because summer is ECF's slowest time of year with our friends out of school and away on vacation.

But summer is actually a great time to organize a fun event to help ECF's kids! And anyone can do it!

For example...

In May, 5-year-old Matthew Wright of Bergen County held a car wash and raised $30 for the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation!

Other ideas:

A pool party with a purpose - Invite your children's classmates and neighbors to a barbeque or pool party and encourage everyone to bring a donation for the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation.
Wine Tasting or Martini Parties - Wine tasting season is upon us, so why not visit your local vineyards, pick up a case of Riesling or Shiraz, and invite your friends to join you on your deck with their glasses and a small contribution to ECF?
Dress Down Day at work - Is your business casual attire too much for these warm summer days? Organize a Dress Down Day on a Friday at the office; everyone can donate $5 to ECF to wear shorts and short-sleeves for the day!
Goodsearch.com - Looking online for a great summer getaway? Use the search engine, Goodsearch.com and designate ECF as your recipient; ECF gets a penny for every search. It doesn't sound like much, but it adds up!

ECF's Annual Charity Ball was the Most Successful Event in the 24 year history of the Foundation! Honorees Joel and Stephanie Markel, along with their family and Joel's company, Preferred Healthmate, and its affiliates, netting nearly $60,000 to support ECF's program. Additionally, the 2005 Honoree, Sorrentino Development Corporation, was a Platinum Sponsor at the event. The event was held on February 3, 2007 at the Channel Club in Point Pleasant Beach (Monmouth County). ECF Spring Appeal

While five-year-old David* and his 16-year-old brother, Peter*, were roughhousing in their bedroom, their family thought nothing bad could come of it. Only when Peter bumped into a plastic dresser, and his whole side turned exceptionally black and blue, did his family take notice. What they hoped was just a slow healing process turned out to be something much worse.
Peter had leukemia. Even worse, five-year-old David was just completing his own treatment regimen for Hodgkin’s Disease, a form of lymphoma.

The family was shocked and terrified – two children diagnosed with cancer!
Peter and David's family was already familiar with the cancer routine: intense rounds of chemotherapy, extended hospital stays, and a constant gnawing fear. Not to mention the often excruciating side effects of treatment.

For 16-year-old Peter, side effects include throbbing in his joints and knees, muscular pain throughout his body, and severe headaches and backaches. Because he is on a strict course of chemotherapy and steroids, which weakens his immune system and depletes his energy, Peter has been home-schooled since his diagnosis.

Peter gets through each day knowing that he has one person he can talk to about anything. One person he can be himself with. One person he and his family can rely on to answer difficult questions and offer several forms of support. That one person is his Caseworker, Lila*.

Peter's diagnosis has placed additional stress on his younger brother, David, who is already coping with his own battle against cancer. David is struggling in school and doesn’t understand why Peter isn’t going to school now. Fortunately David is now in remission.
This story is just one example of the hundreds of cases our dedicated, professional caseworkers—like Lila—handle every day.

Specific Counseling Issues

Examples of specific counseling issues with which ECF Caseworkers may help families...

Fear
Ø a child who is old enough to know the word “cancer” may associate it with death, especially if he or she has experienced losing a grandparent or another family member, or may know of someone in the community who died from this disease. A child may also fear certain medical procedures, such as a spinal tap, surgery, or an MRI.
Ø a parent’s immediate reaction upon hearing a diagnosis of cancer is often fear of losing their child. As the situation progresses, other fears set in, such as the fear of losing their home or car, as keeping up with bills becomes difficult, or fear of a recurrence once the treatment is over.
Ø siblings and may be afraid of “catching” cancer from their brother or sister.

Guilt
Ø the child may feel guilty for the disturbance they are causing in the family.
Ø parents may wonder what they could have done wrong to cause their child to develop cancer – did they give them unhealthy food, was it because of the immunizations, are they raising their family in a contaminated area, etc. On a religious level, some parents may wonder if they are being punished for something.
Ø siblings may feel guilty for feeling relieved that this is happening to their brother or sister and not to them.

Resentment
Ø the child may resent the fact that he or she is the patient, and not a sibling. This resentment may lead to guilt.
Ø parents may resent, on some level, the tremendous disruption in their lives. If this feeling is expressed or allowed, it, too, may turn into guilt.
Ø siblings may resent the attention that a brother or sister is getting from family and friends, from organizations and health professionals, and especially from parents. Again, what ensues is often guilt for having these feelings.

Anger
Ø the child may be angry that he or she is ill, missing school, not able to play with friends and participate in activities, etc. A child may also be angry, frustrated, or confused by the doctors who are explaining the medical situation to the parents, especially if he or she is old enough to comprehend what is happening.
Ø parents may be angry at friends and family for withdrawing or for not understanding, or on a spiritual level at a higher power for allowing this to happen to their child (and not to them, instead).
Ø siblings may be angry at the disruption in their lives, too, as they may be carted off to extended family, see less of their parents, or otherwise feel that they are missing out on normal family life or are neglected.

Depression
Ø the child may experience depression, especially during times of isolation while hospitalized, or due to the perception that they are missing out on their usual experiences and fun with their friends. Depression may negatively impact a child’s treatment, so it is especially important to help alleviate it quickly.
Ø parents may experience feelings of tremendous hopelessness about the future for their child and themselves. A single parent is more susceptible to depression, due to the limited resources inherent when raising a child without a partner.
Ø siblings may suffer from depression, often, at a young age, masked as behavioral problems or as other symptoms of which parents may not be aware.

Marital conflict
Ø conflict between parents is extremely common, given the enormity of the challenges that the family has to face, and the fact that in all probability they have never had to deal with anything of this magnitude before, therefore have no basis for developing skills to help them cope.
Ø this is exacerbated by the fact that men and women often have very different ways of viewing the world, and parents develop different coping mechanisms for dealing with stress.

Dress Down Day

Private and Parochial School Students Dress Down for Kids with Cancer

Private schools across New Jersey are encouraged to "dress down" for a day this September to commemorate Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM).

Participating schools designate one day in September 2007 as "Dress Down Day". On that day, students, faculty, and staff may bring in $1 for the privelege of "dressing down." 100% of every dollar donated will benefit the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation, New Jersey's first free, in-home support network for pediatric cancer patients and their families.

“We’re hoping for statewide participation for this event. It’s a simple and fun way to raise awareness about pediatric cancer for kids in school,” said Carol Davis, Managing Director for ECF.

Who Makes it Happen at ECF?

CASEWORKERS -- the front line providers of our signature in-home counseling and support services. ECF Caseworkers are trained professionals who are compassionate, caring individuals, who provide valuable resources, information, support and understanding to New Jersey's pediatric cancer patients and their families. Each of ECF's 14 Caseworkers is a New Jersey resident and is equipped to help ECF families cope with their child's diagnosis.

REGIONAL DIRECTORS -- the cornerstone of ECF's fundraising activities and the driving force behind event planning, awareness building, and coordination of material assistance services for families, ECF's Regional Directors serve as the Ombudsman to their local and regional community. ECF currently has five regional centers across New Jersey:
